First Female President Appointed to US Sea Service Organization

Norfolk, VA July 28, 2016: Commander Denise McCallaCreary, a 27- year Navy veteran was recently elected President of the National Naval Officers Association (NNOA), during their annual convention held in Norfolk, Virginia.   McCallaCreary is the first female to be elected President in the organization’s 44-year history. The National Naval Officers Association (NNOA) actively supports the U. S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the recruitment, development and retention of a diverse Officer Corps that is representative of the best our nation has to offer.

“Serving in this new leadership role will afford me an opportunity to guide others to success while ensuring that we connect, build, and strengthen our pipeline of talented military leaders…”

McCallaCreary was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies and migrated to the United States as a teenager. She joined the enlisted ranks in 1973 and was later commissioned in the Navy in 1978. During her commissioned officer career, she served in shore based leadership positions retiring in 2000. She has been active member of NNOA since 1983 leading the organization’s NROTC Coordinator’s program, actively participated as a member of the San Francisco Bay area chapter, and most recently served as the Western Region Vice President. In her new role as President McCallaCreary will serve a two year term as the organization focuses on membership growth, education/mentorship, and community service.

NNOA, a 501C3 non- profit organization was started in 1971 by a group of Naval Academy Officers who wanted to assist the sea services recruit, train, and retain minority Junior Officers. NNOA focuses intently on training and mentoring sea service officers toward career success while charging them to increase awareness and promote the sea services in communities where they live and serve.

Each year, an annual leadership training conference supported by sea services chiefs is held either on the West or East Coast of the United States. The next annual Conference is set for August 2017 in San Diego.
